A new way of life

Last week in Ephesians, we talked about the idea that Jesus has given us new life (freedom from sin) so we walk in a new way of life (that is, obedience to him). Tonight we’re applying that same idea to HONORING AUTHORITY, specifically, the authority of our parents.

What We’re Teaching

Obeying parents is just something that doesn’t come easy to most teens. They are becoming independent entities (and that’s a good thing!) but it can lead to conflict. Also, there are a number of complex scenarios that make honoring your parents difficult: unreasonably demanding parents, discouraging parents, broken families, and parents that aren’t followers of Jesus…

However, it’s at this tension point that Paul applies the gospel: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” What we want students to know is that 1) God institutes authority, 2) God is goal is to make us more like Jesus — therefore, honoring and obeying our parents honors the God who gave us our parents.

As hard as it may seem, God has design in giving us our parents. We’re going to be jumping into Ephesians 6:1-4 tonight.

Parent Connection

While Paul instructs children to obey their parents, he also gives this command in verse 4:

“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”

Biblically, the role of parents is to bring up a children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. That’s exactly what we want to HELP you do!

We’ve attached a few resources we hope will help you as you raise your kids to love Jesus. Don’t feel the need to try and read all of these, just click the ones that seem most helpful or appealing to you.
