Vertical Students Tonight — January 6, 2019
We’re so excited for all that God is going to do in our students’ lives in 2019. We’re kicking off the year with a new series called Know God, all about practical ways we can know God better in 2019.
What We’re Teaching
Growing up in a Christian home, my parents would tell me, “Make sure to read your Bible!” or “Turn off that video game and go spend some time with God.” Sometimes it more like a chore or punishment — like I was in time out with Jesus!
If we’re honest, almost all of us have been there. Spiritual disciplines don’t always feel like a joy or delight, even though that’s exactly what they should be! We’re too busy, it feels complicated, and sometimes it doesn’t even feel like it makes a difference.
But what if there was a better way? What if the Bible is better than we thought? In Psalm 19, David says that God’s Word revives our soul — is that your experience reading the Bible?
This week, we’ll unpack what it looks like to know God better through studying his Word.
Bid Idea: If you want to know God, get to know God’s Word
Do you think it’s important to read the Bible outside of church? Why or why not?
Do you have a favorite Bible story or verse? Why is it your favorite? (It’s okay if they don’t have one! Share with them one of your favorite and why it’s meaningful to you)
How can we read more of the Bible in 2019?
Challenge: If you’ve never read the Bible with your student, maybe pick a passage and tell your student to read it on their own. Then, come together and discuss it. You don’t have to make this a “teaching time,” the goal is just to get a discussion going on what the Bible says. Ask more questions than you give answers.
A Resource: How to Help Your Student Read the Bible in 2019
Some families already have a regular rhythm of reading the Bible together, but for others, it can be challenging — how do you encourage your student to read the Bible? Here’s a resource we came across this week to help! Click the link below to view the article.
Thanks for partnering with us to make disciples of the next generation! We’re excited for all that God has in store in 2019.
